I personally appreciate that both of you are security-minded and are doing your bit to help educate/improve awareness regarding personal cyber security. Thanks for the tips. As someone (not in IT) who has attended more than one professional class on this topic I endorse and second your tips and tricks. I would just add, parents, please watch over your kids and do your part to keep them safe. It’s downright scary what bad players can do with innocent seeming information.

Now, that I’ve added my bit of a scare, I truly hope you all enjoy getting together for SheaCon. I can’t attend. So I’ll be looking forward to reviewing all the recorded events posted afterward. Be smart, be safe and have fun!

Discord Safety Tips

Greetings, Champions! With Sheacon 2022 just around the corner (July 29th through July 31st) I thought now was a good time to go over some general discord safety tips for anyone attending, or interested in joining our community discord! (For info on how to join discord, check out this link)

When it comes to discord, there is no one better to teach us than our Director of Discord, Vin! She keeps things safe and fun in our community server, but I recognize Discord might be a new method of communication for some of you, so you might feel better about joining if you had a few safety guidelines to follow. Here is what Vin has to say about the topic!

Hello, Champions!

As Kitty has said, I am Vin, her Director of Discord. Some of you know me already, but a lot of you have only heard of me through her newsletters. I am a part of her Mod Squad team and have watched over her Discord for over two years now. In this newsletter, I am going to touch on a few topics of Discord safety. I take my role very seriously in protecting the Champions while also keeping the group a fun place to be. While SheaCon takes place on a separate server than Kitty’s Champion server, I have worked very closely with Cindy and the other SheaCon planners to ensure that it is just as safe. And if you are confused about servers, think of them like different Facebook groups.

Now without further ado…. Vin’s Top Safety Rules for Discord.

  1. Discord has a rule that you can only use the platform if you are over 13 years of age. We are very safe and family friendly, but this is not my rule. They will shut down any server if they think those in charge know about children under 13 on their server. Therefore, I am required to report anyone that I believe to be under this age. Sorry!

  2. Remember your regular rules of internet safety! If you are a minor, that means not giving away your real name, age, or area where you live. Over 18? Use your own judgment, but it can be fun to make up an online personality. Spoiler: my real name is not Vin! When speaking of where you live, most Champions will give their home state or country.

  3. Picture sharing. This doesn’t happen very often, but unless you are over 18, please do not share pictures of yourself. Even more rare: don’t share pictures of minors that are not your minors. (A parent can share pictures of their children if they choose.)

  4. Let’s see… last would be other small details. Like don’t join a server if you don’t know who invited you and don’t accept a friend request from a stranger.

Whew, now that you are thoroughly scared of Discord, let me assure you that we are a very friendly group of Champions! We get to talk about Kitty’s books and other fun topics. Kitty will even come on to cackle at the theories that are discussed, throw out some cryptic line to fuel the fire, and then leave. What’s not fun about that?!

That’s all I have at this time, but I do have another article on the more technical “What is Discord? I’m so lost!” side of things to help any newcomers.

-Vin

Thank you, Vin, for your input and for your dedication to keeping us all safe! Next week I’ll share the article she mentions above, which is for those who would like some tips/tricks on how to use discord. Until then, thanks for reading, Champions, and have a lovely day!
