Do you love The Frog Prince fairy tale? This well known fairy tale has it's own Disney adaptation! And one interesting twist that most modern takes on this fairy tale add is the prince/main male character going through a growth arc (or at least gets his well deserved comeuppance!)

Let's take a look at some fantastic retellings of this Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

The Frog Prince - by K. M. Shea - This is my version in which I heavily gutted the original story because in the original both of the main characters are pretty detestable (if you don't believe me read this other blog post). It features a romance between seemingly arrogant Prince Lucien and the maid assigned to protect the now-very-much-a-frog prince.

Now for the full list! I asked my reader community for their top suggestions (I asked for no spice and low language but check reviews if you have questions about the content). Since these are coming directly from readers you can think of them as a book rec from a friend!

The Princess and the Pea is probably the most famous fairy tale that doesn't have its on Disney Princess adaptation (did you know there is a musical called Once Upon a Mattress based on it?). And if you are a reader there are lots of delightful retellings of this story for you to enjoy!

Let's start things out with a special call out:

The Princess and the Pea - by K. M. Shea - This is my version of the tale and it is always free (yes, that's not a typo) so you can get it right now without waiting. And it's a novella you can definitely binge in a day or a single sitting if you are a speed reader! It's a prequel to my longer series of standalone fairy tale retellings and serves as a perfect introduction without spoiling anything!

Many thanks to the readers on social media who gave me suggestions for all these other Princess and Pea retellings! And since these are all reader recommendations you can think of them as a friend rec! (I asked for no spice and low language but if that is a concern for you be sure to check the reviews.)

For 2025 I wanted to give my Fairy Tale Retellings board on Pinterest some extra love.
